Purtan Podcast #57: Anchor Away!

It’s Friday… and that means it’s time for a brand-new Podcast! (#57 for those of your keeping track). Today Jackie and I welcome my daugher (one of Jackie’s five sisters) JoAnne, back to the conversation. As many of you know, JoAnne is an anchor on Channel 7 news. Today she reveals some exciting “behind the scenes” secrets about how local news works, what goes on during the broadcast, and some tricks anchors use to keep from sounding well, uh, stupid.

Today’s podcast also features cameo’s by JoAnne’s two kids, Lauren (11) and Adam (9) who reveal something that JoAnne did no less than 37 times this summer during one visit to Cedar Point. They also share their feelings on exactly how they think their Mom looks without make-up. (Ouch!).

There’s also a great story about what happened to TV reporter Bob Bennett while he was broadcasting live behind the rear-end of a horse. (Yup… it’s exactly what you’re thinking!)

And since it wouldn’t be a Purtan Podcast without some sort of health tip… I’ll tell you about a great new dark chocolate treat I found at Costco plus I - “Doctor Dickie”- offer up my favorite natural remedy for heartburn. (And after listening to this podcast, you might need it!)

Have a great weekend and I’ll see you back here on Monday!

Crucial Vote Could Have Soda Pop On The Rocks...

The New York Board of Health today is set to vote on the controvertial Soda Pop ban, that would make it illegal to sell or purchase sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces. If it passes, those found guilty could face a fine of $200.

- $200? That’s just a buck less than it cost you to buy a 32 ounce drink at your local movie theater now

- Call me crazy, but couldn’t somebody who wants 32 ounces of Coke just buy 2 16oz. bottles?

9/11... 11 Years Later

Hard to believe, but eleven years have come and gone since a beautiful September morning turned to one of unspeakable tragedy.

We all know where we were when we heard the news - and then watched as our lives were - in a matter of minutes - changed forever.

So many lives lost, so many left behind to grieve, so much bravery.

But even as the flames continued to burn in Manhattan, Washington DC and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania - an amazing thing happened. Americans proved to ourselves - and the world - who we were as a people: Strong. Resilient. United.

Like our flag, the fabric of our nation might be torn at times, or frayed with age - but it remains, always, Red White & Blue.

At the end of that seemingly endless day eleven years ago, President Bush addressed the nation. We took his speech and set it to the theme from the movie “Glory”. As you take time to remember and honor this day, take a few minutes to listen to the words that helped a nation begin the process of healing.

God Bless you and God Bless America.
